Bio Sand Water Filter Program
Every year, nearly 6,00,000 children die in India due to illnesses associated with unclean drinking water. Inspire of this, 2 out of every 3 households still do not treat their drinking water, and half of the rural water supply, where 70% of India’s population lives, is routinely contaminated with toxic bacteria. In the villages of Bihar, people are not aware of the dangers of contaminated water and also do not have the means of convenience to obtain potable water. Bio Sand is a simple water filter method that uses sand, gravel, and living microorganisms to clean water. A compact, concrete, or plastic body is filled with layers of prepared sand and gravel. These layers remove the pathogens and suspended solids from the contaminated drinking water. At the top 2 cm of the sand layer, is the biolayer, which is a colony of bacteria and microorganisms that gobble up most of the pathogens in the water.
Since August 2019, PPI has supported ASS with the BSF project to address drinking water quality issues in 10 remote villages of the Minapur and Kanti blocks in Muzaffarpur district in Bihar The project helps to better access to safe drinking water to 210 rural households by the end of three years along with the orientation, education and awareness activities.
